What Is A Dental Filling?

A dental filling is used to replace areas of decay in one or more of your teeth. Fillings can last for many years, and help to retain the structural integrity of your tooth. They are easily placed, and the procedure itself takes just about half an hour in our office. Removing decay and replacing the area with a filling can prevent the need for an eventual extraction or root canal.

Why Would A Dental Filling Be Needed?

The most common reason for needing a filling is because you have a cavity. The decay is removed from the tooth, and a filling put into its place. Fillings are made of composite resin, and blend seamlessly with the rest of the tooth. They can last for years with proper oral hygiene and care.

Who’s A Candidate For Dental Fillings?

Dr. Ghosh will perform an exam to determine if you have one or more cavities. If you do have a cavity, we recommend having a filling placed as soon as possible to prevent the tooth decay from getting worse. Because the procedure is so quick and easy, it is ideal for patients of all ages. Both pediatric and adult patients will benefit from having fillings placed when they have a cavity.

What Happens During The Procedure For Dental Fillings?

The first step is to administer a local anesthetic to the area receiving the filling. Dr. Ghosh will then remove any decay from the tooth. The small hole in the tooth is prepared for the filling, and the composite resin put into place. It’s smoothed out, and any excess filling is removed. The filling is hardened with a curing light, and once curing is complete you’ll be ready to enjoy your brand new restoration.

Several fillings can be placed at the same appointment, as long as they’re on the same side of the mouth. Fillings are durable, and you can treat them the same way you would the rest of your teeth.
